Short answer
No. You sign up with an email and password or a Google account and call over wifi or mobile data from a browser or the app. No SIM card, no phone number and no card are needed to open the account; you pay only when you add calling credit, from the smallest top-up of $10.
How can a call work without a SIM?
The call travels over the internet from your browser to our carriers, who connect it to the ordinary phone network. The person you call answers a normal call on their landline or mobile and needs nothing installed.
Can people call me without a SIM?
Yes, if you rent a US or Canadian number (from $3.19/month). Calls to it ring in your browser or the iPhone app over the internet.
What do I need, then?
An internet connection, a microphone and a current browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave or Safari. A laptop's built-in microphone is enough.

Signup is free, but calls to phone numbers are paid per minute. Free calls without a SIM exist only app-to-app.
