Browser calling vs chat apps vs a mobile carrier

Chat apps can work without a SIM, but usually call only other users of the same app. TwinPhone calls ordinary phone numbers.

When calling without a SIM is useful

Travelers between SIMs

Your home SIM is off or roaming is expensive. Open the browser on Wi-Fi and dial.

Wi-Fi tablet and laptop users

A device without a SIM slot can still call a real mobile or landline number.

People avoiding carrier lock-in

No calling contract or monthly plan. Add credit and pay only for completed call minutes.

How SIM-free browser calling works

Carrier Wi-Fi Calling still needs your SIM and your mobile plan; it only moves the call onto Wi-Fi. TwinPhone needs no SIM at all: you sign up with an email, and the call runs in a browser tab on a laptop, a Wi-Fi tablet or a phone. The person you call answers on an ordinary phone.

Your browser captures microphone audio and sends it over your internet connection using WebRTC. Signalling and media are encrypted in transit with TLS and SRTP.

TwinPhone bridges that encrypted browser call to the public phone network, so the recipient's normal landline or mobile rings. They do not need TwinPhone or a smartphone.

Your device only needs internet access and a supported browser. A virtual number is optional and is only needed if you want a dedicated number for callbacks.

Calling without a SIM — FAQ

Clear answers about browser calls with no SIM card.

Yes. TwinPhone runs in your browser and uses your internet connection instead of a SIM on your side. You can call ordinary landlines and mobiles in 145+ countries.

Yes. Open TwinPhone in a supported browser on a Wi-Fi tablet or computer, create an account, add credit and dial the full international number.

Signup is free and needs no card, so you can open the dialer and see the rate for any number before you pay anything. Calls to phone numbers are paid per minute from a $10 top-up, from $0.02/min to the US and Canada, and the exact rate appears before the call connects. Calls that are free without a SIM exist only app-to-app, when both people use the same chat app.

No. A phone's built-in Wi-Fi Calling normally remains tied to its carrier account and SIM or eSIM. TwinPhone is a separate browser service and does not require a carrier number on your device.

No. TwinPhone bridges the browser call to the public phone network, so the recipient answers on their usual landline or mobile.

No number is required to place an outgoing call. Renting a virtual number is optional if you want a dedicated number for incoming calls or callbacks.

Call signalling and media under TwinPhone's control are encrypted in transit with TLS and SRTP. As with any call to the public phone network, the final carrier leg follows the recipient carrier's security model.

With TwinPhone you call a foreign number without a SIM in four steps: open twin-phone.com or the app on Wi-Fi, sign up with an email or Google, add credit from $10, and dial the number with its country code. The rate for that exact number appears before the call connects.

Yes — TwinPhone needs only an internet connection, so it works on Wi-Fi with no cell signal, no SIM and no mobile plan. Calls go to ordinary landlines and mobiles in 145+ countries, and the person you call needs no app or internet connection of their own.

Yes, with a rented number — TwinPhone rents US, Canadian and Puerto Rico numbers from $3.19 a month, and incoming calls ring over the internet in the browser or the apps, at $0.02 a minute from your balance. Without a rented number, your calls show a shared TwinPhone number that cannot be called back.

Yes — TwinPhone has no subscription for calling: you top up in packs of $10, $25, $50, and $100, pay per minute, rounded up, with a one-minute minimum, and unused credit never expires. Only a rented number, if you want one, is a monthly charge, from $3.19.

Partly — a TwinPhone number receives SMS from US and Canadian senders with no SIM involved, and WhatsApp codes do arrive: 41 numbers received 55 WhatsApp codes in the 90 days to 27 September 2026. Telegram, banks and most payment services refuse virtual numbers, so their codes do not arrive.
