Why "From $0.01/min" Headlines Mislead
Here's the problem with most comparison articles: they list the lowest possible rate each service offers without telling you which country or call type that applies to. "Rates from a penny a minute!" Sure — to US landlines. But you're calling your family in India or the Philippines. That changes things dramatically.
We were guilty of it too. Until July 2026 this page advertised three cents a minute to India. Today we bill $0.08/min to an Indian mobile and $0.08/min to a landline; three cents was a price floor, not a rate to India. Every TwinPhone figure below is read from the same pricing engine that bills the call, one figure per country and line type, and on several destinations it is higher than a competitor's — those rows are still in the table.
So: actual rates to popular international destinations, landline and mobile separately (because mobile is usually dearer), with connection fees and subscriptions accounted for.
The result is a comparison based on what you'll actually pay, not what the marketing page wants you to believe.
Rates Checked on 11 October 2026: TwinPhone vs Talk360 and Yolla
Per-minute pay-as-you-go prices in US dollars, mobile first and landline second. TwinPhone's column is read from the same pricing engine that bills the call. The other two were read on each company's public rate page on 11 October 2026: Talk360's pages price calls from the United States; Yolla's pages do not say which country the caller is in. Several figures are "from" prices that depend on the destination carrier.
| Destination | TwinPhone | Talk360 | Yolla |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | $0.08 / $0.08 | from $0.05 / from $0.07 | from $0.0239 / from $0.0239 |
| Mexico | $0.02–$0.04 / $0.04 | from $0.06 / from $0.06 | from $0.011 / from $0.011 |
| Philippines | $0.36 / $0.36 | from $0.24 / from $0.22 | from $0.144 / from $0.18 |
| Nigeria | $0.30 / $0.48 | from $0.14 / from $0.20 | from $0.129 / from $0.15 |
| United Kingdom | $0.12 / $0.06 | from $0.17 / from $0.12 | from $0.10 / from $0.06 |
| Canada | $0.02 / $0.02 | from $0.06 (flat) | from $0.0119 / from $0.0119 |
| Germany | $0.22 / $0.17 | from $0.25 / from $0.37 | from $0.12 / from $0.075 |
Read it plainly: on price per minute alone, Yolla is cheaper than TwinPhone to most of these destinations, and much cheaper to the Philippines and Nigeria. TwinPhone is cheaper than Talk360 to Mexico, Canada, Germany and the UK, and dearer to India mobiles, the Philippines and Nigeria. Some services also sell flat monthly plans per country that beat any per-minute rate if you call one country a lot.
Not in the table: Rebtel, whose rate pages on 11 October 2026 showed two different per-minute prices for the same destination and did not say which caller country or tax they apply to; and Viber Out, whose rate pages show prices only in the browser, by the reader's location.

The 8 Services We Compared
Here are the eight international calling services this guide covers:
- TwinPhone — browser-based VoIP, 60-second billing increments, TLS + SRTP encryption.
- Google Voice — free US/Canada, metered international. US-only signup.
- Viber Out — calling credits through the Viber messaging app.
- Rebtel — unlimited plans for specific countries or pay-as-you-go.
- Vonage — traditional VoIP, per-user monthly plans.
- Microsoft Teams — Skype's successor for chat and meetings. Microsoft says the free version of Teams does not support paid calling plans, so it makes no paid calls to phone numbers (Microsoft Support, checked 11 October 2026).
- Dialpad — AI-powered business phone, priced per user per month.
- Hushed — privacy-focused temporary numbers with calling.
We excluded WhatsApp because it cannot call real phone numbers — only app-to-app. If both people have WhatsApp, the call is free, but that's a different use case entirely.
TwinPhone Rates to 10 Popular Destinations, Landline and Mobile
One figure per country and line type: what TwinPhone bills per minute on real destination numbers. A range means numbers inside the same country bill differently.
| Destination | Landline | Mobile |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $0.02 | $0.02 |
| Canada | $0.02 | $0.02 |
| Mexico | $0.04 | $0.02–$0.04 |
| Brazil | $0.08 | $0.06 |
| India | $0.08 | $0.08 |
| United Kingdom | $0.06 | $0.12 |
| Japan | $0.15–$0.25 | $0.16–$0.24 |
| Germany | $0.17 | $0.22 |
| Nigeria | $0.48 | $0.30 |
| Philippines | $0.36 | $0.36 |
An earlier version of this table also listed Google Voice, Viber Out, Rebtel, Vonage, Teams, Dialpad and Hushed with figures checked in March 2026. We removed them because we could not re-check them on 11 October 2026: Google Voice's rate page shows prices only after you sign in, Viber Out prices load by the reader's location, and Rebtel's pages showed two different prices per destination. Microsoft Teams is not a per-minute option at all: the free version has no paid calls to phone numbers.
Key takeaway, stated plainly: no single service has the lowest rate to every country, and we are not the lowest on most of the table above. If your calling is concentrated on one corridor where another service is cheaper, use it.
Billing Increments: Everyone Rounds Up, Including Us
The tables above show per-minute rates. What you actually pay also depends on how the service rounds your calls — and this is where comparison articles usually claim an advantage that does not exist.
TwinPhone bills in 60-second increments, rounded up, with a 60-second minimum. A 45-second call is billed as 1 minute. A 61-second call is billed as 2 minutes. A 2:05 call is billed as 3 minutes. Many pay-as-you-go services round to the whole minute too — check each provider's terms. We do not claim an advantage here.
How much does the rounding cost? On a typical pattern of 50 international calls per month averaging 3 minutes 22 seconds, with a realistic spread of short, medium and long calls, 168 minutes of talking bills as 198 minutes. That is an 18% surcharge — and it lands on any service that bills by the minute, ours included.
What it does mean is that short calls are disproportionately expensive. If you leave a lot of 20-second voicemails, you are paying a full minute for each of them. The only defences are calling less often and picking the lower rate, which is why the rate tables above are the part that matters.
Anyone selling sub-minute increments as their edge should be asked to put the number in writing. Ours is 60 seconds; it is in our pricing FAQ, and it is what our billing code does.
Hidden Fees and Gotchas: What the Comparison Tables Don't Show
Per-minute rates are only part of the cost. Here's what else to watch for:
Connection fees. Some services charge a flat fee per call on top of the per-minute rate, which is brutal if you make many short calls. TwinPhone does not charge a connection fee; check each provider's terms for theirs.
Monthly minimums. Vonage and Dialpad charge per-user monthly subscription fees regardless of how much you call. If you make $5 worth of international calls per month, you still pay the monthly fee. TwinPhone has no monthly minimum — you load credit and use it whenever.
Credit expiration. Some prepaid services expire your credit after 30-180 days of inactivity. Check the terms. TwinPhone credit does not expire.
Platform lock-in. Viber Out requires the Viber app. Google Voice requires a US phone number. Vonage requires a monthly plan. TwinPhone works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave and Safari with no downloads (the iPhone and Android apps are optional), no existing phone number required, and no contracts.
Call quality variance. The lowest rate means nothing if the call sounds terrible. Budget calling cards and some low-cost apps route through the cheapest possible path, resulting in echo, delay, and dropped calls. Whatever you use, a stable connection and a headset make the biggest difference you control.
The Encryption Factor: Why Security Should Be on Your Checklist
Most people don't think about call security when choosing a calling app. They should.
A regular phone call over the cellular network is not end-to-end encrypted. With VoIP, the situation varies by provider.
TwinPhone encrypts every call with two layers: TLS (Transport Layer Security) for call setup signaling, and SRTP (Secure Real-Time Transport Protocol) for the audio itself, between your browser and our network. The last leg, over the destination's phone network, is ordinary telephony, as with any call to a phone number.
Google Voice uses standard encryption but not end-to-end. Viber Out encrypts app-to-app calls end-to-end but Viber Out calls to phone numbers use standard encryption. Microsoft Teams encrypts in transit. Rebtel and Hushed use standard TLS.
If you discuss anything sensitive — financial information, medical details, business matters, personal situations — encryption matters. TwinPhone provides it by default on every call without charging extra or requiring an upgraded plan.
Whatever you choose on price should also encrypt the call; with TwinPhone, the internet leg of every call uses TLS + SRTP.
Which Calling App Fits Which Use Case
Here is which service to use based on your situation:
Calling India regularly: not us. We charge $0.08/min to Indian mobiles; on 11 October 2026 Yolla's India page listed from $0.0239/min and Talk360's from $0.05/min to mobiles, and Rebtel sells an unlimited-India plan for heavy callers. Come to us for India only if you want to call from a browser with no app and no US number.
Calling the US/Canada from abroad: Google Voice is free if you have a US number. If you don't, TwinPhone charges $0.02/min to the US and Canada — and $0.02 really is what we charge there, and only there.
Calling multiple countries occasionally: pay-as-you-go with no monthly minimums means you only pay when you call, TwinPhone credit doesn't expire, and one account covers 145+ countries instead of three apps and three balances.
Calling one country very frequently: price an unlimited plan for that country first. If you call India for 500+ minutes per month, a flat country plan such as Rebtel's can beat per-minute pricing from anyone, us very much included.
Business calling with team features: TwinPhone for teams that want per-minute calling with no seat fees and team wallets. Dialpad for teams that prioritize AI coaching and don't mind a per-seat monthly fee.
Calling the Philippines: not us. We charge $0.36/min to Philippine mobiles; on 11 October 2026 Yolla listed from $0.144/min and Talk360 from $0.24/min.
Maximum privacy: Hushed for temporary disposable numbers. TwinPhone for encrypted calls to real numbers with a permanent account.
Why Browser-Based Beats App-Based in 2026
Here's something most comparisons ignore: whether you need to download an app.
Viber Out requires the Viber app (200MB+). Rebtel requires the Rebtel app. Hushed requires the Hushed app. That's three different apps eating storage, draining battery, requesting permissions, and sending notifications.
TwinPhone runs in your browser: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave or Safari. No download required (the iPhone and Android apps are optional). No storage consumed. No permissions beyond microphone access.
This matters for three reasons:
No installation barrier. Sign up with an email, top up, and call from the same tab. Try doing that with an app-based service — you need to find the app, download it, create an account, grant permissions, then figure out the interface.
Works on any device with a browser. Desktop, laptop, Chromebook, tablet, phone. Switch devices freely without reinstalling anything.
Always up to date. Browser-based apps update automatically. No nagging update notifications. No "please update to continue" roadblocks.
In 2026, installing a dedicated app just to make phone calls feels like installing a dedicated app to check the weather. The browser already does it.
How to Get Started with TwinPhone
If you've read this far, you probably want to test TwinPhone against whatever you're currently using. Here's how:
- Go to twin-phone.com and sign up with email or Google. No credit card required.
- Add credit from $10 and test call quality to the country you call most.
- If the quality works for you, add more credit whenever you need it. There's no monthly fee.
- Dial any number in 145+ countries. The rate is shown before you connect so there are no surprises.
- Optional: grab a virtual number for local caller ID. US and Canada numbers from $3.19/month — the only countries offered today.
Every call is encrypted with TLS + SRTP and billed per minute. No app to install, no contract to sign, no credit to expire.
Check the full rate card for your specific destination before you commit. The rates page shows per-minute costs to every country, broken down by landline and mobile.
Verdict: Where TwinPhone Costs Less, and Where It Costs More
The honest verdict is not the one this article's title implies. On raw per-minute rate, against the two services we re-checked on 11 October 2026, TwinPhone costs less than Talk360 to Mexico, Canada, Germany and the UK, and more than Yolla to almost every destination — much more to the Philippines and Nigeria. Flat country plans beat per-minute pricing from anyone if you call one country for 500+ minutes a month. Google Voice is free to the US and Canada if you have a US number.
So pick us for what we actually do well: signing up with an email, no US number and no card, calling 145+ destinations off one balance instead of juggling three apps, seeing the rate for the number you dialled before it connects, TLS + SRTP on every call, no subscription and no expiring credit. If instead your calling is one heavy corridor and price per minute is the only thing that matters, buy the cheaper service — we would rather tell you that here than have you find it on your first invoice.
The cheapest international calling app isn't the one with the lowest advertised rate. It's the one whose advertised rate is the rate it charges you. Ours now is; until July 2026 it wasn't, and that is why this article was rewritten.
