MagicJack: The $43/Year Home Phone
MagicJack's selling point is dead simple: a USB-sized device that plugs into your router and gives you a US/Canada phone number for $43/year. That's about $3.58/month for unlimited domestic calls.
International calls cost extra at per-minute rates. The device only works at home (it's plugged into your router), there's no mobile or browser option, and the hardware needs to be replaced every few years.
TwinPhone: Your Phone Goes Where You Go
TwinPhone doesn't need hardware because your browser is the phone. Call from your laptop at home, your tablet at a coffee shop, or your work computer at the office.
For international calls specifically, TwinPhone's rates are competitive with MagicJack's, billed per minute with the exact rate shown before every call — no connection fees and no hidden charges. Add encryption and US and Canada virtual numbers — features MagicJack simply doesn't offer.
Who Should Pick Which
Pick MagicJack if you want the absolute cheapest home phone for US/Canada calls and don't care about international calling, mobility, or modern features.
Pick TwinPhone if you make international calls, want to call from anywhere (not just home), care about encryption, or need features like US and Canada virtual numbers.
Many people use both: MagicJack for a cheap home phone line, TwinPhone for international calls and on-the-go calling.
